“Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts.”
Isaiah 6:5
If you were to ask me what was a book that had a huge impact on my walk with the Lord, it would be “Holiness Of God” by R.C. Sproul. Never before had I seen or heard a more thorough explanation of what God’s ‘holiness” actually means.
The first time I read this book, I couldn’t finish it. Suddenly before my eyes, the beauty of God’s holiness came to light and I felt as if I was Isaiah standing before HIm saying “I am undone!” Nothing makes us more keenly aware of our sinfulness than learning who God really is. It is overwhelming and overpowering.
And yet not crushing. R.C. Sproul does a marvelous job of walking us through scripture to teach us about God’s character. R.C. is a gifted preacher, but also a gifted teacher. He does not speak over your head or try to impress with an academic flourish that many authors do. He makes God understandable and knowable. It is clear that R.C.Sproul is very passionate about this subject.
“How we understand the person and character of God the Father affects every aspect of our lives. It affects far more than what we normally call the ‘religious’ aspects of our lives. If God is the Creator of the entire universe, then it must follow that He is the Lord of the whole universe. No part of the world is outside of His lordship. That means that no part of my life must be outside of His lordship. His holy character has something to say about economics, politics, athletics, romance–everything with which we are involved.”
